Organization: Belize Wildlife and Referral Clinic About: Spend 2-3 weeks with the Belize Wildlife and Referral Clinic taking courses in wildlife conservation and medicine. The course is typically 2 weeks but externships are available which can also be done as a clinical rotation. Activities include attending lectures, observing surgeries, and assisting with patient treatments and procedures. Opportunities may vary based on the current patient population. Depending on the case load there may also be plenty of time to explore Belize culture! Area of emphasis: Wildlife/conservation AND Small animal Perfect for the summer after your first (for the courses) as well as during clinical rotations (as an externship) Housing: Typically an apartment is provided by the clinic. UGA-BAHA One Health PartnershipCity: Multiple cities visited
Organization: Belize Agricultural Health Authority, BAHA About: Work with the veterinary services division of the Belize government to learn about public service veterinary medicine. Activities that we participated in included (1) conducting needs assessments to strengthen relationship between rural livestock smallholders and the Ministry of Agriculture; (2) training Community Healthcare Workers (public health specialists) in improved recognition and reporting of zoonotic diseases (3) training livestock smallholders in improved recognition and reporting of notifiable livestock diseases, and (4) auditing Live Bird Markets and poultry slaughter establishments and making recommendations for improvements in sanitation, food safety, HAACP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point) compliance and humane handling. Minor duties included (1) contributing to legislative documents related to control of transboundary animal diseases (e.g. Avian Influenza and Newcastle Disease) and (2) assisting with field investigations and ante-mortem and post-mortem inspections of animals/ carcasses infected with suspected reportable animal diseases. There are also opportunities to design your own projects/ tasks that align with your specific interest areas and further the mission and goals of the Belize Agricultural Health Authority. About: Large animal veterinary practice summer/winter study abroad offered with CELA Belize; gain hands-on veterinary examination techniques at working ranches and farms as well as learn about large animal agriculture in Belize.
