City: Kuala Lumpar
Expected experiences: Here you can work in the field of Public Health. Previous students' work involved sampling wild bird feces for Salmonella and Campylobacter. Pigeons, geese, and swans were sampled directly (swabbing the cloaca) and indirectly (swabbing fresh feces). This is a great experience to improve your proficiency in the lab as well as learn various diagnostic tests for infectious diseases. Most lab tests will require 6 days of work in a row with the seventh day off. Best time of year: Mid May - Mid June (before Ramadan) Perfect for a month long summer experience after your first or second year in vet school. Housing: Student dormitories are only a 5 min walk from the vet school and most students stay in these dorms. Internet, AC, and hot water are not provided but cold showers are supposedly nice in the heat. The cost is approximately $75 for a 4 week stay. Public transportation is available to explore the city easily. Contact: For the same project contact Dr. Zunita Zakaria ([email protected]); for a similar public health project contact Dr. Corrie Brown. Avg cost of excursion: $4000, including flight. Funding: Freeman Asia Scholarship through UGA; various amounts offered in both the winter and summer. Up to $3000 may be awarded. |
